PRESS RELEASE                                                     14th April 2008

Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) would like to sincerely congratulate His Excellency the President Hon. Mwai Kibaki and Hon. Raila Odinga on the formation and announcement of the long awaited cabinet of the Grand Coalition Government.

We as the women of Kenya are especially overjoyed by His Excellency the President’s appointment of seven women Ministers and six Assistant Ministers into the cabinet, the highest number ever in the country’s history! MYWO alongside other Kenyans now see the commitment of our leaders in the implementation of women representation in leadership positions which formed a considerable part of most political party’s campaign promises. We are glad that significant steps have been made in promoting gender balance in public appointments.

MYWO on behalf of all its four million members and women of this country at large,  takes this opportunity to congratulate all the women Ministers and Assistant Ministers on their appointment to the cabinet. We wish them well in their work as we all struggle to make Kenya a country we are proud to call home.

The massive effort and the great sacrifices made by our leaders for the sake of this country’s national unity, healing and reconciliation process is not lost on Kenyans. We, MYWO carry on with our calls to His Excellency the President Hon. Mwai Kibaki and Hon. Raila Odinga to continue including women in leadership as we strive to build this great nation. God Bless Kenya.
